SIMS Metal – State of the Art Security and Shared Values

Introduction

SIMS Metal, a global environmental services conglomerate, buys ferrous metal from metal dealers, peddlers, auto wreckers, demolition firms and others who generate obsolete metal.

As a global leader in metal recycling and providing circular solutions for technology, and an emerging leader in municipal recycling and renewable energy, SIMS maintains the strongest commitment to the environment, sustainability and the health of the communities where it operates. Its leadership position was built through an uncompromising commitment to safety, customer service and the expertise and loyalty of extraordinary people.

Corps Monitoring supplies and manages a dedicated remote monitoring solution (dedicated desk) to secure SIMS property portfolio across the UK. Covering CCTV monitoring and fire monitoring services, the prerogative is to safeguard the estate from the threat of fire and theft as well as health and safety monitoring during working hours, ensuring staff are wearing the correct PPE etc. To eliminate risk, there are multiple cameras on each of the sites, along with a 24/7 monitoring provision that alerts and mitigates threats in real-time.

Challenge

SIMS required a security solution to protect its valuable assets. With the cost of high-quality copper reaching £7,000 per tonne, combined with the fact that the business’ sites are isolated, the risk of theft is significant.

After a large and costly fire in one of its branches, SIMS was also acutely aware of the fire risk. SIMS sites often recycle small domestic appliances so fire is a consistent threat because they can contain lithium batteries which are highly combustible and can ignite with little effort or warning.

SIMS needed a security partner with an approved alarm receiving centre, that had the necessary experience and scale to handle any issues, as well as look after the health and safety monitoring of its staff. It was also keen to work with a security provider that shared its people-first approach.

Corps Monitoring and SIMS Metal State of the Art Security and Shared Values

Solution

Having completed a detailed security review, it was clear that Corps Monitoring, with our state-of-the-art ARC and monitoring centre (CMC) in Glasgow, was the right partner for SIMS.

Upon appointment, we implemented a help desk with a team to conduct ongoing health checks of the systems, carry out live health and safety monitoring, footage requests and incident investigations.

Given the very real threat of fire, fire detection is a key part of the team’s remit. Corps uses analytic cameras on some sites which when activated trigger a relay to activate the water hoses/cannons.

In addition to our clear ability to meet the security and safety requirements on each site, SIMS found that Corps Monitoring was a good fit in terms of its business values. As a member of the Living Wage Foundation and a Social Enterprise, SIMS was keen to work with a partner that prioritises ESG commitments.

Result

Since starting work with SIMS in 2022, the Corps Monitoring ARC has identified in excess of 150 active incidents including break-ins, internal thefts, third party thefts and fire detection. The team has detailed daily reports highlighting the events that have occurred on each site, as well as noting and escalating any faults with the on-site security systems.

All ad hoc patrols are recorded and what was observed is logged, while details about any faults are instantly and automatically emailed to a relevant engineer, and a notification received once the fault has been rectified.

These improvements have ensured that on site staff and management are able to spend time on other duties, improving efficiency and cost effectiveness.
